The cheapest alternative is catching baby mud crabs from salt water is very slowly adding the aquariums (freshwater) water, maybe a cup an hour, Or you can make a drip system I saw a few days ago on this forum. Do this maybe for 12 hours? Then gently add the mud crabs to the tank.

The mud crabs won't grow to maximum size, They can stop there growth to suit there environment, When there is lots of little cavities around for the crab to hide in sometimes they won't want to grow due to safe hiding places. They also don't grow in a hostile environment for more chance of survival.

The mud crabs can live in this fresh water because they often travel into brackish through to fresh water to rid parasites and can often get lost on there way (maybe for one year), this means that we can keep them in the FW forever.

An easy way to ensure a good long healthy life for a mud crab is to introduce it too salt water (slowly) for a day every month, then slowly adding FW back to the bucket with the crab inside it.
