Jose, we get wild altums locally from time to time that are available for shipping on aquabid. Lemme know if you want me to keep an eye out--they're pretty affordable.

Also, looking at your setup, and your wild discus (and knowing exactly how much those cost ;)) I don't think you can claim "poor man's" anything. :D

Ha that's the thing, I've spent way too much already! And I've heard it can be difficult to acclimate wild altums as they're very fragile. How much do they go for?

Imma break it to you straight dude. I'm very envious of your capabilities to assemble one bamf setup.

Thanks!

Amazing pics Jose.
If I can get wild Altums in the middle of nowhere, you should be able to get them where you are. :)

Thanks James! Surprisingly, I've never seen them for sale locally. Everything is online and involves shipping.

man, you take doing it right the first time... to a WHOLE new level

Thanks!

They haven't been around in the last couple shipments and I can't remember the price off the top of my head, but I will keep an eye on it and let you know. When I was working wholesale it really depended on the shipment how well the altums would do--sometimes they would acclimate great and do very well, other times most would die. Pretty much the same as any WC "sensitive" blackwater fish. They arent nearly as sensitive as WC discus IME. I'm sure you are getting to know your medications pretty damn well these days with those guys--that's how it goes though.

Oh, I can tell you that the current stock here of WC scalare are $12 each, or 6+ for $10 each.

Took the time to get some nice photos of the tank! You'll notice I added 3 angels and a group of lemon tetras to the tank. The angels are the poor-man's version of the majestic Altum angels...maybe one day. A few discus are missing from the 190g since they didn't seem too happy. I think some internal bugs may have returned, so they're currently being treated in separate tank. All part of the game.

And some new photos of the Alenquers in their QT tank. These guys are really looking amazing. They rarely show their mood/stress bars, meaning they must really be happy :)

I like the fact that you have a market shrimp in the tank ahhaha

Yeah definitely keep me posted. I've seen those supposed tank-bred Altums lately, but I don't think they're pure; their bars look nothing like a true Altum. Some say they've been cross bred with scalare. I have a LFS that says they tried to bring in a few batches of Altums a few years back, but they could never keep them long enough to even be sold, so they gave up. I'd love to buy a group that's already acclimated, like Joey's. But he's all the way in socal :(

Now that I'm running RO water, my GH and TDS is very low, so I think they may be alright. My goal is to have my TDS similar to what's been reported in the areas where the wild discus are caught, which goes from 10-30ppm TDS.

Thanks! He's a Whisker shrimp. I have a few in there, really cool to watch.
