This filter design will work? (a video question)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
At the time I was looking for a place to hide my new filter the idea of it being in the shop rather than in the room next to the pond was suggested.

There is a guy I have been asking pond questions to and he has a great pond with the filters in a different room, ( see his pond at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBx682QTLoM ) so I knew I wanted to have the filters in with the car.

But there is not a lot of room to set things out that safe from my wife running over them with her car....
My new filter means a lot to me and the fact is I would not leave a bag of dirt next to where she parks with the way she drives....

So thats why I have my filters up and out of the way so High up.

As for the shelves being able to handle the weight once the water is turned on?
The filters dont really hold much water in then even when turned on.
If you look at the first photo below you can see the main barrel filter's drain is just a few inches off the bottom of the barrel, so Im thinking that it's less than 3 gal in there.
The tower has only a small amount of trapped water at any one time.

And I also made a plywood shelf that sits on top of the metal shelf and so all the future weight of the filter is not actually pushing down on the metal shelf but rather the weight is pushing down on the up and down metal shelf supports where there is more strength.
The metal shelves are also screwed to the wall 2x4s so nothing can bend or move at all.

Im betting it will work,,,
and I have no back-up plan anyway so lets all hope for the best.

i dont want to discourage you but the whole barrel could have been a bio tower as the bacteria works better when in contact with air.
I should have went over the design of the filter on the video better.
The design was given to me by a guy on this forum named WOLF.

The water enters the barrel at the very top, and flows into 6 floor buffing pads, then into the rest of the barrel filled with kitchen scrubbies.
The drain out of the barrel is just a few inches off the bottom of the barrel and so this means that the scrubbies are up and out of the water and so there is lots and lots of air to mix with the dripping water..

I should really re-do my video and go over how the water runs.

Im getting messages that I should have no problem with a good size pump as I mean to get being able to push water up and into my two filters...
So Im going to simmer down and get back to work with picking out a pump and looking for it to get warm enough to start adding water to the pond!

it looks like you would be getting a good amount of air exchange in the barrel there by not even needing the tower. and with out the tower you wouldnt need as strong of a pump to go up that hole way

Yes, thats a good thing to keep in mind.
I have the ability to turn off the flow of water to the tower with a valve.
I will do so if there is a problem with pumping power.
