I'm done with HOB filters on his tank though. I'm going to have to pick up a second canister filter and close everything off a little better.

Be careful doing that. My fire eel lived in a HOB filter for a long time. When i removed it, even with an other hiding hole provided, she escaped and was found dried up the next morning.

Ultimately in the future I'll have another wet dry setup and can have a completely sealed lid. For the time being though I'm going to try to have no holes that are accessible for him.

I have my 30inch fire eel in with a school of big geophagus and it is an awesome tank!!! Fire Eels with peaceful schooling fish are definitely a great combo. Hope you have fun with your new setup and congrads on finding the fire eel finally.
