Yes I agree about the parking lot, some people (with not enough to sell to make it worth while to get a table, or time to sit), or felt the auction was iffy, would place adds in the gcca classifieds, and you could meet them in the lot or lobby (when it was warm enough).
A few years back I picked up 30 Guinacara that way for maybe $1 each, before walking in the auction.
I figure the seller thought he might only get a quarter of that, if bagged for the auction.
I've also had friends attend the swaps, and pick up pre-ordered bags when I couldn't make it. The last swap I ended up with half dozen Astatheros robertsoni.

And I agree, most swaps and auctions are definitely overkill with Africans, but I also believe that's what the general public wants.
Was that FORMERLY "Amphilophus" robertsoni.....a.k.a. the "Emerald cichlid"??

You big city guys have it made and don't even know it. The entire KC metro area only has about 1,000,000 people and 3 stores besides the chains. I haven't bought a fish from a local store in years. And even the good ones can never seem to special order a fish.

Live in Florida now. Not too many fish that I want available. Everything is shipped to me. Costs me a lot more but I'm happy with what I get and where it comes from.

i think we are in the wrong part of the hobby. Gotta go Africans or reefs. I will never ever ever be a dirty dirty pretentious reef keeper.
Yea we have a couple decent shops around here luckily. Another one you should check out is pet paradise. They have more monster and oddball type fish and a lot of trade ins. Too bad you weren't here 2 years ago. Had a place called animal jungle Was about the size of a wal mart. Had everything under the sun. Even had large jungle cats, monkeys , giant shark pond and every fish fresh or salt you could imagine. Closed after 40 years. Getting choked up thinking bout it hah.

Astatheros was at one time considered to be superficiously part of Amphilophus, but DNA has been found it to be different enough to be separated.
If you go to the Facebook group Heroine cichlids, all the research is available to be sifted thru there.
I have thought for a long time Astatheros didn't really fit in to the Amphilophus group, the Astatherines always seemed to be closer to other Central American eartheaters (i.e. Thorichthys) than the others.
To me Astatheros rostrum is a perfect example

There used to be a family run pet store on Johnson Drive in Mission, KS. Might still be around. They had crazy stuff like baby crocs and also monster fish. I hit my first wolf fish there.
You ought to see if they're still in business.

At Gerber's Tropical Fish in Moraine, OH they have a wide variety of fresh and saltwater fish. They also take trade ins so they have some pretty big monsters for sale. Some of their more common monsters are large red tail catfish (of course because so many people buy them thinking they can keep them, at least for a while, and then realize two months later that it was a mistake), arowanas, knife fish, rays, cichlids, silver dollars (many varieties) and several more.

I saw a guy there a few months ago that was buying a few of their larger catfish to ship to someone down south. I think he was a member on here and was selling to another member. According to some of the reviews online they have customers that drive up from Florida. Not sure how true that is though.

Mission Pets? Still around, but not nearly as good as they used to be.

There is a couple decent shops near me but none have anything you couldn't find a petsmart for the most part. I've had good luck so far just ordering online but I really like to look at what I'm buying before I buy it.
