The LFS now work at officially does NOT condone "painted" fish of any kind. Looking at our order forms we've clearly had several species that were "painted" or "tattooed" and we lost most before we could sell them. Now I am essentially in charge of buying and I will NOT order colored fish. People keep asking for them, I tell them they lose their tattoos anyway and whatever fish they have already with those patterns. They tell me "oh yeah, we had one with a heart, one with *numbers*, one with this, yeah they've faded pretty bad."
I tell them why, briefly explain the process, show them the unpainted fish they have, they thank me. "Why doesn't it stay like a human tattoo?" I don't know, I just know fish die over it.
Finally even the owner agrees, no more painted fish

'Cept I had to show him the logs showing over 75% loss before we could sell them over the last year.
We still have "painted" fruit tetras that have long since lost their color, no more colored fish come in though.
