So I've always wanted a Gar and I finally got one off a friend last night. He's about 6.5 inches. The gar was in a tank with paranha and they bit up his tail :( I gave him a night to relax in my tank and today I went out and got him some Rosies, but he isn't eating them! Is there something wrong??? I tested my water everything is Ok. I've been dealing with aggressive fish for the past 3 years and I just don't know why he isn't eating!

HELP!!!!

If you literally just got him, he could be stressed. The bites on his tail isn't helping. Just give him a good long week in the tank with minimal lights on disturbance. Most larger fish will eat readily in a few days but smaller fish are far more skittish. After a week see if he ate any and then come back and tell us how it went and we can help further.. Also what size tank is he in/tankmates?

he is new itll take time for him to adjust to wat u feed and to you

he is probably still adjusting to his new home. i have never kept a gar but whenever i get my fish they dont usually eat for 1-2 days. after that they are fine, might be different for you but its probably nothing to worry about

I said it was normal, but both your answers are questions so...

Give it a week, should be less but after a week you will know for sure as stated above.

My gar has been switched through 3 aquariums in the past month. I know it's horrible that I did that, but he's fine now and in his forever home. The last time I switched him he was really stressed, he didn't eat for 3 days. Keep the rosies in there though, he'll get to them when hes hungry.

Right now he's probably all wtf is going on. Keep the lights off in the aquarium and possibly close your blinds so its nice and dark and make sure he's got somewhere, or a few somewheres to hide. Once he settles in, he'll be a relentless killer. :)

Good luck!

Also, as I'm typing this, my gar is hunting rosies :D

Also on a related note regarding small gars. I've noticed that when my gar goes to strike and misses, he stops the hunt for a good 5-10 minutes. None of my other fish do this, they miss and they just continue. It's like he gets upset he missed and goes cry in the corner until he's ready to hunt again hahah

My 12 inch would do this when I first got him. He would miss the shrimp then be like screw this I have better things to do and just swim away.

this is a strange thread. who, in their right mind keeps any fish with piranhas? he's not eating because he's been traumatized by the piranhas, as well as being moved around. give him timt to settle in a calm down.
