This is not a blackbelt, is it?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is only about 3 inch, the pictures may make the fish look bigger than it is.

It is getting more blue spangles on its body and more blue and red on his fins. You can also see that it is getting red colouring around his head. I'm swinging more towards bifasciatus too.

All pics are of the same fish taken yesterday.

It is going to be hard to tell til he/she colors more :) Not a black belt thats for sure:)

MY Fen looked similar.. But he has color :) Give it a day or two and watch for color that will come in.. Then add another pic with color here :)

Yes those look more like black belts :)

For what it's worth, all Maculicada (Black Belts) don't necessarily have the "belt". We caught a variety of this fish in Honduras that does NOT have the belt. I saw a beautiful adult male while snorkeling in the Rio Jutiapa. I would say that Fishman is right on.

I just thought i would post an updated picture of the little guy. He is pushing 4 inch now.
Starting to get quite an attitude. Getting more reds and blues.

Any further ideas?

Hard to tell with the color in the picture....Synspilum, Bifasciatum or a combination of one or the other Paratheraps flavors.

The thing is with small veja most of them start off with a black line & drab grey coloration maculicadas (black belts do also), they don't usually color up until around 5 inches at least mine didn't. only time will tell the updated pic. is hard to tell maybe a side view of it. will help.

It's a shame that blk belts loose alot of there color as they grow. Lfs near me had three of them about 2 to 3 inches that had the colors of a fully mature jd. A couple of months went by and you could see they were loosing the color and the belt was showing more.

mine never lose color unless they are scared which is rare.

the most likely reason those blackbelts lost there colour was becuase of a poor diet or poor quality water. I have had Maculicauda and the colours got better and better as it got bigger and older. one of the key things for good fish colour is a good quality food and a good variety of food too. also keep up with the water changes.
