Weird, none of the shops around here would ever refuse a sale.

If I was the owner I would not refuse sale either. I don't care if you take the fish home and cook it and eat it. Once you buy it, it is your business what you do with the fish.

"Want to put a silver aro in a 10gal? Right on, have fun!"...would be my response.

X2

store owner did the right thing . . . maybe that kid will be motivated to actually do some research, realize the owner was right, and then one day he'll be able to buy that arrowana and properly house it

lots of people like to laugh or get angry when some thoughtless owner keeps a fish in a tank that's way too small . . .. well, the flip-side of that is you ought to have the back of LFS owners who do the right thing and try to keep ignorant people from making bad decisions

if you don't care about fish, what are you doing on MFK?

Good that he can afford to do that with customers.

. . . Very valid point, because most LFS's can't turn down business due to trying to survive these difficult economic times. In my market, we have a LFS that is closing out, right now. They're going out of business and running a big sale. They're not asking questions. They're selling any and all fish to anyone with a buck.

Youd end up losing business because of your greed......if you did that I wouldnt buy from you!

Funnily enough when business is packaged right like that then sometimes more people buy more! In theory if you are so impressed by him caring more about the fish than your money you may well spend a lot more with him.

I often buy on enthusiasm and morals more than anything else.
Me too!

guy did right thing lfs here wont sell to ya if you are buying a new tank and fish they just wont sell fish cause they lose money giving away fish that aint payed for. but if ya want the tank they sell it to ya and will sell fish to ya if you bring in a water sample to make sure all is good.

I agree with the approach...

Offer them the truth, then allow them to make their own decision...

I've gotta believe any hobbyist would appreciate a store owner who is trying to educate his clientelle... but at the same time doesn't want to send his potential customers to his competition...
