Most LFS dont have the real estate that it would require to properly house fish. Most of them dont intend to have any one fish on hand for more than 30 days. After so long the upkeep of the fish, exspecially large fish such as sharks, begins to become greater than the profit. Thus their BS tendancies to try and push the fish off on any sucker that will pay for it. These guys are in it for money, not the love of the fish. In my very humble opinion you would need a store the size of a super walmart to do it right and unfortunatly there isnt much of a profit margin at that scale. It would be damn near impossible to churn out enough fish to make that work. But wouldnt it be grand to walk into a LFS that had rows and rows of 1000g+ setups for the real monster keepers to shop? It is truly sad to see such magnificant creatures stuffed into what amounts to puddles in comparison to what they require to even be somewhat comfortable. To a wild caught free ranging species of shark even a 2000g aquarium is just a holding tank. But to alot of these stores, who the product goes out the door with and where its going means nothing, and to the people giving out the poor advise at the LFS its just a job, and they care just the same as the owners do. As Monster Fish Keepers it is our duty to take some of these fish out of these horrible situations they are in and give them atleast some chance at a better quality of life. I see it little different than rescuing a dog or cat. WE are the ones that love these creatures. WE are the ones that see so much more in them than a profit. Whatever species you fancy, or whatever fish you keep, do it big and do it right. Spare no expense. These creatures have given their lives for our enjoyment. The least we can do for them in return, is everything we possibly can.
