my mum got a 55 so I took her to my lfs to buy her some fish. I pointed out some great fish of all shapes and sizes but all she wanted was two fancy goldfish. she is still chuffed with her fish its not what I would have got but thats the point its not my tank.

A 55 gallon is good for two fancy goldfish. Nothing wrong with keeping goldfish. The difference is, some people pick fish THEY like. And treat fish with the same value as other fish. The people who see it different usually don't see fish in the same value, nor have any real fish taste or respect for fish. It is a cool vs uncool attitude. And like I say some people pick fish based on what others have and think is cool. It is those same people that don't keep fish for a long time and usually make threads getting out of the hobby. Don't you see that your mum is happy with her fish? That is what really counts. I can't say some people here are really happy with their fish, it is mostly just trying to maintain a status or belonging.

For everyone, I wasn't hating on his fish. I like goldfish, they're cool. I was just kinda disappointed that he took the time to make a nice filter. and fish, then just leave this tank so bear. I see a lot of things he could have done aquascaping wise.

Whats wrong with a gold fish tank? *cracks knuckles*

No but really i dont know if its happened to u guys that have the opportunity for alot of tanks, but there have been times where i have so many tanks running with everything ive ever wanted and everything was perfect for the time being and i would have that spare large tank that ive turned into a goldfish tank. Although i can see why most people who cant set up large multiple tanks up anytime would see this as a waste. Its how i feel when i see reefs over 55 gallons. Not what i would do with a tank like that but hey to each their own. And goldfish seem stupid because of their history and the way they've been portrayed in the pet trade over the years, But if you stop to really appreciate a beautiful monster gold fish over 6" its easy to see why someone would want to give them the best home possible.

A friend of mine has a grown son who has a 300 gallon fancy goldfish tank. He has spent as more money for some of his goldfish as I have for my rays and my old tig. They are premier show type specimens and very cool to see in person.

The coolest goldfish I have ever seen were at my buddies lfs. They were trade ins from a guy who was breaking down his pond. It was an inground swimming pool with a 10 ft deep end. Something like 30000 gallons. Picture an oranda a foot long with a head the size of a softball. They were awesome.

Those goldfish are elegant and should grow larger and stay quite healthy. Other than adding some decor, I don't see changes.

I like big tanks, with some bright / some low lighting, some heavy / some spacious decor and understocked. I really prefer to not see fish swimming to dodge other fish, while I like the look of a shoal having the open water to swim some. If one fish wants to be alone with space, there's space.
