To me if you were that upset/concerned I don't think I'd allow there to be a next time, if it eats frozen then I'd stick with that personally...
he eats frozen and those big cichlid sticks but theres no reason once in a while he cant have a treat not only for him but watching a bass eat a fish is pretty awesome and im sure alot of people agree with that... and the sunfish i obvioulsly fed to him wrong when i go fishin again ill probably get him another small sunish but ill make sure its done right this time.... correct me if anyone thinks im wrong about that one

I don't think it's wrong, I too believe the occasional live treat keeps them on their feet and gives them a little excitement. I'd just be a little more concerned with what it is you're feeding them live.

Careful with that, diseases might be introduced to your aquarium. If he eats pellets and shrimp I see no reason for feeders man. If you're still going to catch some of those sunies, please quarantine and medicate them.

Please don't feed sunfish, and that's why.

If you want to feed live feed something that doesn't have nasty spines like a sunfish. Watch him closely for infection because I can almost guarantee he has lacerations in his mouth and possibly his gills, not to mention the effect stress has on his immune system.

And yes, quarantine, who knows what you might introduce from a wild fish. Feeding live food requires precautions (I can almost guarantee he's infected with internal parasites if you're feeding unquarantined wild caught native fish. Almost every native fish I have kept has had some form of internal parasite)
Personally I won't feed live foods because there are diseases you can introduce that you will not be able to successfully treat.

In any case, glad he's ok. Good luck.

any updates

I wouldn't feed sunfish either just because there not the easiest feeder imo.. You could just stick to rosie's. I do agree that if it's on frozen then that would be best for right now. An occasional feeding of feeders isn't bad but you want to make sure it's safe for your Cichla.
