Has anyone ever tried using two strong stands end to end to support longer tanks? Say if you covered the top with 3/4" wood? I ask primarily because of metal stands, its hell trying to find a sensible price past 75/90/110 size.

I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. As long as the weight is evenly distributed on the two tank stands made to hold the same size tank.
Yeah, never saw an issue as long as the tank was level across the 2 stands. It wasn't any different when I also used cinder blocks stacked in multiple columns with a plywood or 2x4 top.
I have seen two of the Petco metal 40b stands used under a 125gal.
I think I had a 30 on there.It was quite a few years ago.
Local fish clubs are actually a treasure chest full of information from hobbyists who moonlight as stand makers for reasonable price depending on what area you are from on wood stands but harder to find welders but can be done you might get lucky and know someone who had a business make it cheap for them. Check those industrial businesses instead of fish hobby centered shops. They can custom make stands for you too.
