We all know the Vikings were the first to discover North America right? Vinland, ect.

But what about South America??? Was it really the spanish????

I find this quite interesting... Especially this quote-

in excavations that took place in Sidon, French archaeologists found in 1860 many wooden artifacts that only could have been taken from Brazil, according to archaeological tests. It is the famous "quebracho" or "quebra machado" (the "ax breaker") as it its known in the Brazilian countryside. Besides that kind of wood a red coloured one was found whose denomination today in Arabic remains the same as the one in Phoenician times: "Shajarat Ahmar" -- known in Portuguese as Pau- Brasil.

Divers investigating the odd stone formation off Bimini Island found a shipwreck, that dated to the 1800's - while searching they found that it lay atop an older shipwreck, one that is positively Phoenician and dates to approximately 1000BC! Dr J Manson Valentine of Yale university confirmed the origins of the wreck. Evidence of other ancient shipwrecks exists, in particular a Punic vessel located off the coast of Honduras as well as one found "deeply buried in sand" in Mexico in the 19th century, another which is as yet unidentified off the coast of Texas as well as what was probably a Roman trading vessel off Beverly Massachusetts

very facinating.

Could this be?

Neal actually I think it was the Chinese that discovered North America. I saw a documentary once that found some items usd by the Chinese boats like anchors and they were supposedly dated before the Vikings. Saw it about a couple years ago.

I believe The TRUST is right, Chinese were the first ones to discover North America. Leif Ericson who was a Viking was the first European to discover North America (Newfoundland).

Can I get some more information? I would not put this down. Being open to anything is the best way to go about history.

The major factor with the vikings, is their settlement. L'Anse aux Meadows. which is solid proof they were there, and lived there.

However.. the first humans to step foot in america, were indeed mongloids... which inturn are now considered "native" americans. Via the artic landbridge.

Chinese were elite sailors to my knowledge, correct? If this is the case, I have no doubts they may have landed.

can I get some more info?

What is your opinion on the phonecians and their brasil explorations?

Wikipedia does a good job summing it up.

There is a consensus among scholars that the Vikings encountered North America before Christopher Columbus, although the continent was already inhabited for over 11,000 years by what are now called the First Nations people in Canada, or Native Americans in the United States.

I have no comment about Phoenicia right now, I really never cared about South America much and never looked into any history. Definitely have to do some reading, great link too.

Yes of course "native" americans were the first. Back durring the human migration, the Americas were seeded with mongloids.

But Thats not whats amazing... what is amazing are these civilizations, sailing the great ocean to find a new world. That is the feat which is of epic proportion... The fact they sailed that ****!

Life back then was already hard enough... Let alone trying to raise money, men, and ships to travel thousands of miles in the open ocean to a land never before seen by your people.

at this point, I dont care who found what first. I care about the hardships these men endured.

Also, if you dont know much about the phonecians, I highly recomend you read up on them... They were IMO one of the greatest people ever.

nowadays 'newfies' are a running joke in canada. maniacs eh
