Rays aren't fragile.. they are usually half-dead before purchase. You're Motoro is probably the hardiest fish you have..

Do you think you could of had a pH swing? With the new addition of the ray you've been feeding alot, so your nitrates could be higher than usual over the 4 day intervals.. with nitrates and fish waste in general being acidic, it could of lowered your pH, and a large water change could of had it 'jump' on you, causing the behavior in the ATF..

Was it swimming oddly, loss of equilibrium almost?.. hovering at the surface, gasping.. occasionally darting into things? any barrel rolls?
 
The night before last I noticed he was like a yellow-ish color.
The day of the water change he was a tad bit yellower. His greenish color had fadded.
When he was dying, he was not breathing hard, but breathing normal just a lot of reps.
He would swim and then just glide in the water and let the current take him. He did eat the prior night. Back to the swimming... He just shut down as he was getting closer to dying. He would swim and then float to the bottom upside down several times, as if his body was to heavy for him to balance himself.

As for my Params, I did not read anything dif. Ph was the same 8.0, Nitrates were low, read 0.0 (don't have the tester that reads .01 just colors. Yellow being the lowest)
Everything looked good, I can say I did not check the Kh,Gh but I doubt it has to do with that??

I'm sorry for your lost, E :( I personally won't do a large water change... I won't go more then 1/3 of the total volume
 
Sorry bout the loss as well....it really SUCKS when the fish actually had some size on it and had grown a bit....Good Luck w/ the next one...;)

Dang, when i lost my atf i was soooooo bummed out. feel for you man, but remember mine got eaten by cyclops
