This week in Panama

Those little juvies are growing nicely!

I miss the tropics too. And lately, I have not even been able to visit in already too many months. One thing to note is that one tends to generalize when comparing places. For instance, Panama or many places in the tropics can look as sunny as Duanes' place at sea level, to fairly gray and chilly, and nearly constant rain in other places in Panama or Colombia, just depending of the elevation of the place you consider, and the type of habitat. Beginning at 2500 mts in elevation, much cold and gray make the general landscape, not so sunny. Not that much higher than that, it sub-paramo climate and vegetation prevail the landscape. The only difference is that in the tropics, the duration of daylight is virtually the same year round. That is not the case in temperate latitudes.

Because my tank is outside, and I don't use any artificial lighting, it is influenced by the seasons. Here in Panama the dry season, with little cloudiness and plenty of sunlight, and the rainy season with lots of clouds, and where the tank gets inundated with tannins that block light.
First, the dry season.

Below, the same area of the tank, lots of tannins, and the vallisneria melted back.

Now as the clouds have let up, and most tannins are washed out of terrestrial plants that leech them, the tank is again clearing up, and the once melted Vallisneria are reappearing.

and the Amazon Sword, once almost crowded out by the Vals, has made a comeback, moved to a log slightly elevated above where they have filled the substrate with Val roots.
