Hi, I believe that's a thorichthys aureus. You mentioned you bought it from maidenhead aquatics, did you happen to give it back in the end? Beacause It look's strikingly similar to the one I have and the patterns are exactly the same, I bought it from maidenhead aquatics at the wyevale garden centre in osterley, so is it possible that I now have it ? or is it just coincidence.

He's around 4-5" now could be something to do with my mate had him in a dirty tank and hadn't changed the water for 6 months, i sold him a 1" gold severum back then also and i saw it today and its a dirty brown colour but about 4-5" he never cleans his tank but feeds them 3 times a day on small hikari gold so his fish grow quick!
I think you're on to something there. Give him some time in cleaner water (and imo better food, as Hikari is just middling in my experience with it) and you may see better color, which in turn may make an ID less ambiguous.

I've gotta go with what Tim (Ichy) said several months ago: without collection locale (and provenance) it's pure speculation.

My guess is maculapinnis (ellioti is not a valid name).

Matt

I have to disagree that it is not possible to be an ellioti . I have seen plenty of ellioti with very weak spangling. Also the aureus picture in the post with all the other Thors looks nothing like any aureus I have ever seen . There is always variability in coloration and patterns etc in fish .
I kind of veiw Thorichthys in the same amnner I view Vics.... if you are unsure of the source and can't get collection info for aureus , maculipinnis / ellioti or mixteco types ......pass them up until you can find a reliable source . I try to trace mine back to Rusty Wessel , someone I trust has the fish Identified correctly.
