Thorichthys with geophagus altifrons

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry I get ahead of myself when I see other tanks. I didn't add any other fish. My altifrons are doing well. Seem to be bigger every day now. I would say they are 3 to 3.5 inches now and very active. What temperature should the water be? I see a wide range from 75 to 85 degrees. I keep them at 77 now.

77° is fine .

Can I put 1-3 thorichthys with 8 3" altifrons in a 6ft 125 gallon tank?

Don't chance it. Thors are way too aggressive for the geos. I had gotten a single Meeki, around 4.5" and he pestered the hell out of my 4 Altifrons, 1 Topajo and even my large Oscar who's a big pussy but 10 times his size. The fish was just a dick.

Then, because I hadn't learned my lesson, I got a pair of Thor Ellioti and believed the guy who told me they were more peaceful than the Meeki. Those little guys were beasts. One was 4" and the other around 4.5". The little one was a complete sociopath and immediately took over the entire tank and forced everyone else to the other side. If mace, an AR15 and a flamethrower could be put into the spirit of one fish, this little bastard was that on Aderall and bath salts. It was so aggressive it took over my female Convict's hollow tree (Only convict and normally pretty sweet unless she's laying eggs and anyone goes near her tree) while the tree had eggs in it and the little bastard beat down the Convict to the point that she gave up on her eggs and just hid under a rock. I took him out and put him in my 75 where I had a clutch of convict puppies growing out that were about 1/2" and it hid in the corner and acted all butthurt and lonely. The other Ellioti, who had been the more peaceful one, remained in the larger tank with the Geos and the Oscar. Never bothered anyone much until one day a couple months later it's ******* light went off and it turned into a raving lunatic as well. At that point, I vowed never to have another Central American cichlid again (Except for my little female Convict who's startlingly beautiful) and I honestly would reccomend against them unless you keep them species specific.

Long story short, no, do NOT get Meeki or Ellioti to go with your Geos. There's a reason some fish are 5 bucks and some are 50, you can tell a lot about the previous experience of others in the hobby based on where the LFS, who relies on value of fish to survive, sets their pricing points.
