picked up a free 20 gallon tank tonight so i am going to move my breeding pair of HRP to it which will free up my 55. I was think of getting some Thorychthys elliotti or some 'Mixteco' blue... what do you guys think ??? which one would you go with and how many in a 55 ???

the filters are an Emp 400 and an xp3.

Both fish are beautiful. I currently have the Mixteco from Rapps and they are looking good at this point. I've also had Elliotti and they too are really cool so you really can't go wrong with either. Post some pics after you decide and get them in the tank.

IMO, ellioti is a better looking Thorychthys than 'Mixteco' blue. But like what driftwood said that both fish are beautiful and can't go wrong with them either.

Either one or six..

Conspecific aggression can be a problem in a small tank. Six will spread out the aggression among them. Once a pair is formed, it is best to remove rest of them. Gl with them.

I had a similar discussion with a guy on another forum. HE kept 4-6 FM's in a 55 with Swordtails (I believe) and it was well planted. I guess the swords come form the same general waters as the FM and really worked well with them as dithers. I'm guessing this might work with the Mixteco's or the Ellioti as well.

Food for thought anyway

Good luck

Barley~

Rob just got elliotti........He has bartoni as well, Im getting some of those.

:) both are realy nice fish, i have 4 elliotis atm picked up 2 more on friday:) they are more aggressive than the fm and IMO i have 4 ellioti, 2fm in a 120 and they dont look as good if they would alone if that makes sence as the look to simular and the elliotis chase my big male fm which he is 2x there size.
personly i would go for the mixteco blue b/c i have both then:) no but i would if i had to pick between the 2. you could have 6 in that tank with dithers and a catfish,
just a heads up they(ellioti's) are alot more agressive to each other than fms, i have 1 seporated from the other b/c he was about 1cm smaller and got pwned so get them all the same size.
i will make a thread and post pics, i picked up 2 nics,2 ellioti's,3 clown loaches and a jag:) too tired now
i thought you said ellioti's were hard to find in the states?

Thorychthys > mixteco by far.
much more graceful looking i think.
and what everyone else said above about # of fish. i would stick with 4. however if you are able to sex them or find an established pair in the lfs that would make things even easier. then in that case just get one pair. you can probably save space and put other things inside.
