I think it needs to be a balance of facts and humurous speculation. The lounge would be pretty boring if every topic was approached with pocket protectors and calculators. But I enjoy hearing all arguments silly or serious.

I love these kinds of debates. I'm fairly educated in this stuff and I find it intensely interesting.

Unfortunately though, I'm also an old school Army non-commissioned officer with a sharp tongue and little to no patience for childishness. I enjoy a good debate as well as anyone, but when people are unable to remove their feelings from the discussion and constantly bicker and fight over petty stuff instead of neutrally debating their point of view the issue, my patience runs thin quickly. In my experience, a lot of people on the internet have a strong opinion about various subjects, but possess very little if any actual knowledge in support of their opinions. As a result, conversations tend to degenerate quickly into ad hominems, straw man arguments and Nazi-calling. As I have no patience for that kind of behavior, I feel it is better to attempt to remove myself from the situation.

Especially now that I have a banhammer.

If we can get this thread back on track, I'm more than happy to talk about the plausibility of various forms of exobiology and the means by which we could explore this.
 
I could think about or talk about this subject for hours. I love it. Just to think of all the wildest forms of life that COULD be out there. There could be life forms that are nothing like plants or animals. Just their own group of life. Two things i love to think of is gravity differences and the relativity of size. On another planet with life there could be much lighter gravity which would likely lead to weaker and less use of muscles( or whatever they have). Also, there could be planets the size of our sun and animals as big as states out there. Size in our universe is very relative.
 
Despite the fact I go way back in being one to give NCOs a hard time and can get down and dirty with the debates,I prefer a spirited, intelligent discussion with open minded people. Hopefully this can remain open.

The lounge has plenty of silly threads, nothing wrong with having serious ones. Then you pick the type of discussion you want to get involved with.
