thoughts on monster glass tank options and moving them down stairs...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, you've got me thinking ... it would take up a lot of space, but I could make a 84x30x30 work. 310 gallons. That would be sweet. Glass would weigh 550 pounds total, but no panel would be more than about 150 pounds.

But seriously... my wife would think I lost my mind. And she'd probably be right. I can't imagine the conversation ... "Honey, I'm ordering several thousand dollars of glass panels weighing 550 pounds, and I'm going to assemble them into a 7 foot aquarium in the basement. Oh, and once it's done, it won't fit back out the door. No, seriously, it'll be fine."

No, I probably can't do this lol. At least not right now.

Its not that crazy. If elon musk proposed the idea people would throw money at him and say he was a genius lol.

But 30" should squeeze through most doorways if you remove the door and hinges.

So I decided to just get the Aqueon 180. I went ahead and ordered the stand, this one:

$900 shipped, not too bad. I owned one of these Empire stands previously, and they are much nicer than what Aqueon and Marineland sell with their tanks in fish stores. It should be delivered Friday, and I'll try to get over to the LFS this weekend to get the 180. I just need to round up a few hombres to help me move it...

Thanks all for helping to back me off the ledge. This aquarium makes the most sense for me right now. And since I'm saving a bunch of money with this option, I won't feel bad about splurging for a nice 3D background and some other luxuries... :)

When I'm ready to upgrade to a true monster, plywood is the way to go. I can build it in place, so no worries about moving it, and it will have glass panels, so little or no scratching. Done and done.

PS. Should I rent or buy some of those suction cup glass lifting thingies?
