Thoughts on stocking?

I also thought mine died the first time she molted, i wasn't expecting it and turned on the tank lights to see a crumpled crayfish husk on the sand. She was hiding in her cave until her new shell hardened. And when she "berried up" with eggs it was really cool watching her shake them and clean them. Quite a fun addition to the hobby.
So that’s how you knew she was a girl, those weren’t fertile were they?

Right, called her bluebeard until he turned out to be she, lol. No, never hatched into babies, i don't know anything about their reproduction but it was several months afte I got her that the eggs appeared, I know there's some mysterious crayfish that reproduces asexually but she wasn't one.

The females can store sperm from mating even months ago. The only time I’ve seen my females lay eggs was this way (eggs never appeared until months after separating out the male).
Best way to tell male vs female is to look underneath (not my pics):

The males have an extra set of legs underneath to aid in copulation.

Do you have any experience with breeding crayfish

Not intentionally. I put 2 together and found one pinning the other to the ground - I thought they were fighting at the time so I separate the two. A few months later there were eggs with the female, but I never really tried to raise them.

Dad thinks crayfish can use this gap to escape. He’s about 3 and a half inches long, do you think it can escape through such a small gap?

I remember I used to have a marbled (self-cloning) crayfish in my 29 gallon. Didn't last very long unfortunately since there was a convict in that tank as well. The hard thing about crayfish is that they either eat the fish or get eaten by the fish.

Unless there’s an easy way to climb up to there I wouldn’t be too worried. I’ve had bigger gaps that mine never went near (but I also give no ledges anywhere near them).
