Looking to get some info on this type of fish before I purchase it. We currently have the following stocking:

4 Clown Loaches - will add 1 more when we can find one
3 Electric Blue Acara
3 Flying Fox
9 White Skirt Tetra
1 Black Ghost Knife

Tank:
300g

Right now everybody is super Chill and gets along fine. I've been reading that the Threadfins are OK if kept alone. Anybody have experience with them long term?

Had three a few years ago and can say they were very aggressive to each other and very glutinous at feeding times lol. In a 300 gallon with a solo Threadfin you should be fine.

There is an article in a back issue Cichlid News mag that recommends at minimum 200 gal plus tank to keep this species as adults, so I believe (like Tom said) you should be fine in a 300.
I poo poo'd that tank size at the time, and tried keeping a group and 150gal.
They did well from 1" until they hit maturity, at about 2.5-3 years.
At that point the alpha killed all other Acararichthys. They never bothered or were aggressive with any other species, even other Geophagines.

Mine also did well as a single in a large tank. It was fine with Heros and Geophagus so I’m sure it would be okay with the acaras. Like any large growing cichlid there’s a chance it could target and eat smaller tetras.

Mine is a good fish. Behaves very well with smaller cichlids, severums, tetras, corys. I introduced some 1.5" rainbowfish to the tank a couple weeks ago and was watching him because his mouth is easily big enough to swallow them. Didnt seem interested at all though.

Ive also seen some debate on whether they sift sand like geos and i can say ive never seen mine sift at all. He actually prefers the top half of the tank to the bottom i think.

I kept my 4 with eba and corys and never had any problems.
