threadfin cichlids with motoro stingrays

Gorgeous rays.... first pic looks like the clown is bigger than the ray haha

Tank size?
Thanks mate. Those Rays are only pups, 4" at best. But indeed some of the clowns are very big, I have one that struggles to get into a 4" pipe head on :)

Tank is 7' long x 30" wide and 24" tall. I will get some pics of the Geos and bigger P13...

The Thread fin Acara (Acarichthys heckelii) was indeed part of the Geophagus complex before being moved to the genus above. These are just as steady as the Geos and in the short term should get on just fine. However once the motoro reach 12-18" disc the situation becomes very precarious, Rays are perfectly designed to take such fish down, once under the powerful disk there is no escape.....trust me its happened to me many times over the years, a hungry gravid female is a very different proposition. As with all fish so long as you keep them well fed they tend to leave tank mates alone, they basically lose the will to hunt, why bother if their food is served on a plate every day......you go on holiday for a couple of weeks however leaving the capable friend looking after them on the reduced diet to ensure they are still fit and healthy on your return and its a case of who'd have thought it!
You need to look at the big picture, the long term, choose fish that will grow with your rays, Geophagus altifrons, True Parrots (Hoplarcus psittacus) Twin bar Tinfoils ( Barbonymus schwanenfeldii), Wide bar Myleus (Myleus schomburgkii) etc.
In very large tanks such as Jim Barry's for instance with plenty of hideouts and copious amounts of food going in every day the risks are vastly reduced, it can work and it does obviously work for some but its a very fine balance.

Good luck with what ever you decide.

The thread fins are teacher fish for the armies so I'm not too worried about them ..... I just didn't want them to mess with the rays ......

I agree with aquaman. I think once the rays can pin fish down, they will kill just to stay occupied. Not even because of hunger.

I've came home to too many head-less barbs, bass and other cichlids

So true.

It's just a lottery with the rays, many many people keep them with cichlids etc and have next to no murders, but just as many do lose fish to them.

I grew out 6 Altifrons in my sump until they were around 5" big. Put one in the main tank and it was fine for a week. Put the other 5 in and then lost them all in the space of a week or so. I feed plenty but something still took out the Altifrons once lights were out. Could have been a ray but could also have been the gars. I was gutted, love the look of the Altifrons!
