heres my hypothesis LOL
1) the large ones are very old, OR
2) they need large volume of water (ie very large tank) to realize their full potential (this may be true for all bichirs in general, not just senegal), OR
3) locale variants differ in max size (and along the same line, there's an unconfirmed subspecie that gets >2', though no confirmed sightings, and whatever description it has its the same as regular senegal, so most doubt its existence as of now. i think the aqualog book invalidate the subspecie), OR
4) we don't see large ones in the hobby since most specimens are farm-bred, meaning the gene pool is not very good, OR
5) any combination of the above
