1) A few weeks ago I proudly posted in someone else's thread that I had only 1 escape attempt by my rope fish, but I saw it happen and rescued him. I didn't need a top on my tanks
. Well, in the last two weeks, 3 delhzis have performed physics defying escapes from their tank, and have succeeded in becoming mummies.
Now all of my tanks have covers (egg crate and/or plexiglass).
2) Barrel rolls mean TROUBLE, not a fish frolicing.
I had a picky eater of an endli in a 10 gal quarentine tank. Not really cycled, but I did massive water changes every other day. In the tank was a brand new monopterus albus (ugly pink, not sexy brown) and a chaca chaca that seems to perpetually have ich. All three have been in the q-tank for a week or longer. I did a 70% water change as usual yesterday without any problems, and then fed them. The endli ate (yay!). An hour or so later he was doing barrel rolls. Cute, I thought. Of course, nothing could be wrong, I just did a water change AND he just ate. Two hours later he was dead.
(Checked my water parameters, and all were fine. Nitrites were at 25ppm, but the tank wasn't cycled, and I JUST did a 70% water change... And for Miles, I had Alkalinity, and it was 7.2 which is about where my tap water always is.) I don't know why he died.
3) TETRAS (characins) ROCK! Or, for my purposes, they are better than cichlids. For years I have limited my attention to cichlids and gouramis for midwater action in my tanks. They (cichlids and gouramis) always had the drawbacks of aggression and/or digging. I hate digging, and I love plants. I found silver dollars and buenos aires tetras recently, and I LOVE THEM. Yes, yes, I knew they were out there, I saw them, sold them, recommended them, but never owned them. Sure, they nibble on plants, but they are not aggressive, and they get big enough to NOT GET EATEN. I don't have to worry about them eating a bichirs' eyeball or anything like that. SWEET.
