One of my tigs has thrown up a small piece of cut shrimp. I changed the water in the morning and fed him that night. Found the thrown up piece the next morning. I have fed him 7 to 8 times, and this is the first time he has thrown up. I have read that they have a tendency to throw up their food if you do a water change soon after feeding them.

He is about 7 inches and has be breathing with his mouth open the since throwing up. Almost like a minor gasping for air.

Is this a normal behavior for them to breath with their mouth open after throwing up? Just want to make sure it's not something else. :nilly:

Any advice appreciated!

that has never happened to me so i can't give you any suggestions. Are the water paramaters okay? Do you have good water movement for oxygenation. Smaller tigs don't need to be feed everyday, so maybe you can take a little break on feeding and try again few days later.

Only experience I've had with a catfish throwing up was one that ate too much. Some just don't know when to stop. Depending on how long the food was in the water it could have caused a small amonia spike which could explain the gasping. Would you be able to test the water and share the results?

I've had both of mine throw up prawns on occasion. I think they get them stuck and just get rid of them. The heavy breathing is more worrying.

I also observe a breathing pattern in my tig, it's not heavy breathing but from time to time it would open it's mouth and try to breath or gulp.

My PH is at 8.4, it's been a problem ever since. But other parameters are normal.

I'll try to get a video when I get home.

Every tig I've seen will do this occasionally I think its normal.

So my 7.5" Tig is throwing up even the tiniest (pinky nail sized) shrimp I am feed it. It takes the shrimp quickly, but spits it up after a couple of hours or so. He has not held anything down in the last 4 to 5 feedings and he is beginning to look a little too skinny. :(

My 8.5" Tig is in the same tank (divided by a divider) and is eating and holding down his food just fine.

I am not overfeeding either of them since I 've read that to be detrimental for their health. But I've also read that small tigs can't really digest shrimp and will spit it out. Is a 7.5" too small to digest shrimps?

Any one with any ideas would be appreciated!

mines at 5" and takes small pieces of prawns just fine.

what i usually do is mash it with my index and thumb before giving it so he can easily chew it.
