I have a 125, and I thought it would be a good idea to add a school of tiger barbs as dithers fish. I added about 40 small tiger's thinking my cichlids would thin the herd abit. But that it would take time. I have an RTM and 2 Jack Dempsey and two Festae. All about 2 to 3 inches still growing. Well, they made quick work of those tiger barbs and now I'm down to 10 in two days. Yeesh. Lesson learned.

They do make excellent dithers but you put way too much of them. Its easier for them to catch since there are so many of them. Those cichlids will eat them quick as well. At least you know now not to use them again lol. Post some pictures of them I bet their bellies are full lol

Yeah they sure do! I mean their not attacking each other so that's a positive. But man did they cull the herd. Lol I'll get some pictures tonight of the fatties. At some point they just started killing them and not even eating the entire thing

I feel the mistake here is the size of the TB. Full grown TB, would stand less chance of getting predated on by 2-3in cichlids

Also could be it. These wherent very big. Maybe the biggest one on the school was 2inches.

I did figure because they where smaller they would get eaten or killed. But I didn't expect that rate of death. I was thinking maybe a couple a week. Not 30 in two days. But I will add less next time, and bigger next time. I know everyone says silver dollars are great but the wife hates how they look. I guess you can't please everyone. Lol

I wouldn't call a 2" TB small, since a 2" TB would be considered an adult. I was thinking small as in less than an inch.

Ahh, my mistake I thought tiger bards grew up to a few inches. Yea it was a mixed bag. Anywhere from half an inch to 2 inches. But the majority where around an inch long.

I just finally got 6 lol I started with 5, then people here started saying a school constitutes 6 or more, and I ended up losing 2 over the next 2 months so I went and got 3 more a few days ago. Don't really see them acting very different, just a little more activity and socializing, that's all.

Based on my experience, I had the best results using giant danios as dithers. They are super quick and can endure more than silly tiger barbs. GL-
