Swimming in a mountain river
I was wondering if my oscar will get more orange as she matures? The little orange she does have is bright and beautiful. But the most she has just kinda outlines her obvious stripes. The place where the orange should be, just has hints of orange. Around her eye spot has a beautiful ring of bright almost neon orange. I'd imagine that bright orange with giant black stripes all over wouldn't be very advantageous for a young oscar. She looks kinda dull in the picture, but around her tail is very bright, as are the more orange areas. And she has some healing injuries so those are the marks you see. They are healing very well:D I feed her hikari cichlid gold, fruits, veggies, and sometimes lunch meat and dubia roach pieces. Thanks and hope to hear from someone soon!:D

:iagree: also..
i happened to notice your keeping goldfish with him/her. To me goldfish dont seem like suitable tankmates for an oscar

Well had them for yrs, no where else to put em. So they just kinda putz about picking up yuck, then sometimes she'll get mad at them for unknown fish reasons then chase them a little, they just dart away, and all's well agin. They don't cause any problems. If its about her eventually eating them, they'll be dead by the time she gets old enough to eat them(they're like twice her size right now, and still growing well, they r around 7+in), and don't plan on anymore goldfish after these guys go. Is there another reason?

I think you're getting grief because of "live feeders" or just mixing SA cichlids with different origin fish.

I just wanted to point out that your goldfish can outlive your Oscar. They have some incredible life spans. You're feending them well obviously from the size of them!

Nah, its because goldfish are coldwater. they produce a lot of waste too, but that is just undesirable in any situation, not necessarily specific to your situation. mostly the temp diff, and they would be happier in colder water is all.

Well the water is 75-80. Never had goldfish at colder. Didn't know they liked it colder than that. Or that they could live a really long time. Guess you learn something new everyday:D And turtle poo does wonders on goldfish and pleco growth. Idk y, but I've had plecos is fish tanks and turtle tanks. The plecos in the turtle tanks grow fairly fast and very robust and healthy, just like the goldfish; compared to a normal fish tank. Well, if they outlive her they'll be monsters too! I'll be a monster goldfish keeper! :D
