Tiger oto

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For both fish it would be best if you could get a new and separate tank for the oto. I suggest for now just keep lights on that timer and see what happens, although 25% is a little low per week but if your nitrates are below 20 before a water change and the algae problem goes away after keeping your lights on a timer then don't worry about that since you have a planted tank. Also during the water change go ahead and manually wipe off the algae off the side of the walls with your hand or you can get one of those magnets from a pet store to do that. I feel like once your plants grow in more the algae won't be able to compete anymore anyways.

I transferred here for school, I live in Madison. Where in WI are you?

I live over near Milwaukee. Where do you get your fish? I have been trying to find a different lfs. Also I don't have room for a species tank for the otos. Also will cherry shrimp eat any of the algae? Maybe I could just try one normal Ito in the mean time to see what the dp does with it and go from there?

Oh and Hoffers is where I have gotten almost all of my fish related stuff. Accept one of my plecos since they don't get in a lot of really cool plecos.

Are there any good fish stores you can recommend in the Milwaukee area that would sell a congo puffer? I'm hoping to pick one up, in Madison there is only one real good one that I would recommend Living Art Aquarium really good selection of fish and generally pretty knowledgeable. What are the tank parameters of the tank right now? 10 gallons is really a pretty small fish tank add in gravel/ sand + decor and you are working with a lot less then 10 gallons. Nitrate control is only part of what is important within a closed system, nutrients not only in the food but in the water itself called trace elements are important for the fish health and competition over territory will occur between the two fish. I don't think there are any ottos that have a minimum tank size of 10 either so I think you'd have to eventually get a tank upgrade. I say wait until you have enough room to house both fish separately or you may run into problems with having to deal with your fish being sick a lot and having to buy medications often.

I recommend Hoffers, but I have never seen them with a Congo, you could also try Aquatics Unlimited (bestfish.com), and the fish factory (thefishfactoryonline.com). I don't have a nitrate test kit, but I do have ammonia which I will test tomorrow. But I mean the brown algae is just everywhere and just started limiting the lights today. What I think is it went through another mini cycle, after I did the fish less cycle.

Also hoffers (hofferstropiclifepets.com) had some pretty cool Abei puffers last time I was there.
Back to the subject, should I just wait it out? I tried scraping some off but this is in harder than most diatoms I run into. It makes it look really ugly......

When did you see the abei there? Ive really wanted one for a while, and I may try and pick one up if they got one this weekend.

Ya get some sort of scrubber, to tackle it. If its horrible enough just remove everything and use oxyclean to clean out the tank.

I saw it like sunday I think.I think there was only 1 of 4 left.

I recommend Hoffers, but I have never seen them with a Congo

They actually had a miurus a couple weeks ago. Someone bought it fairly quick though. If you want special ordered fish, talk to Joe, he has a lot of knowledge and can acquire a variety of species pretty easily.

Pertaining to the diatom problem; what kind of lights are you running?? When I had cheap LEDs on my tanks I had diatoms like crazy. I switched to higher output LED fixtures and the diatoms disappeared and got replaced by healthy, green algal growth. (For reference: I leave my lights on for over 14 hours a day, typically)

I'm going over there today, I'll post what puffers I see. The light I use is a Coralife Nutri Grow 15 W T8.
