hi ive just aquired a TSN but when i went to the lfs the gu said it wasnt a true tsn and it was going to get 6 feet and he also told me that true tigers only get 18-30". so how do i tell what i have. :WHOA:

Tsn get to about 3-4 foot in a tank and up to 6ft in the wild. The Lima Shovelnose's get to about 10-12" as for telling you a TSN gets to 18-30" he is talking :swear: It will get to 18" all right but thats on the way to 36"+ you need a big tank and i mean big or a pond for them show us a picture and we can tell you what you have  This is my TSN is it like this?

I think the fish guy at that store doesn't now what he is talking about.

some example's of what a TSN would look like full grown or close to it ..

these fish (tsn & ) can grow and grow and grow I would'nt doubt that some were in the deepest darkest part of the amazon there is dewlling a 7' 300lb TSN.. THESE ARE'NT BEGINNER FISH AND NEED LOT'S OF ROOM .. if they have a hard time moveing there barrbell's around (whisker's that patroud off the face) they are stressed , also known as tank buster's meaning they break out of the tank if they feel confined at large size (over a foot beware ).. they also need strong filtration . what size tank do you house this fish in?? and size of filter/filter's ??

Amazing cat stotty! I am jealous!

stotty, great looking TSN...looks very well fed.

Ross, awesome pics to show just how big those monsters can get. :clap

Thank you all

I know this sounds sad, but I waited ages to find him my mate had a few come through the shop and I wanted one from tiny to grow up; but a lot of them had cleft pallets and bad fitting mouths also a few blind ones came in. the quality of these fish from the wholesalers was appalling. When he came in he was perfect so I bought him. The pond build gets closer and closer. Its criminal people can sell these fish with advice like that.

full grown tsn are huge

I can offer a possible explanation, the Merodontus tigrinis is sometimes sold as a tigerstriped shovelnose, it maxes out around 24". Common names don't mean much, lol.
The TSN pictured above is much larger and is the (Pseudoplatysoma fasciatum) and is the one meant by tsn on this forum. The following picture is the Merodontus tigrinis and on this forum is usually called tigrinis or even just "tig". The picture is from Arowspace.
