I can offer a possible explanation, the Merodontus tigrinis is sometimes sold as a tigerstriped shovelnose, it maxes out around 24". Common names don't mean much, lol.
The TSN pictured above is much larger and is the (Pseudoplatysoma fasciatum) and is the one meant by tsn on this forum. The following picture is the Merodontus tigrinis and on this forum is usually called tigrinis or even just "tig". The picture is from Arowspace.

i need to get one of those. well i have been saying that for a long time. i just dont think i can spend that much on one fish. i would kill my self it it died. the most i paid for a fish is 50 bucks so far

Maybe for the one pictured. Love those stripes

Im pretty sure if he had a Tigrinus he would know it, since at a LFS he would probly pay over $150 for one!

BTW, The sci name of the Tig was recently changed to Brachyplaystoma Tigrinum.. :)

LOL, I hate it when they do that. I was not suggesting that he was sold a tigrinus, but that might be the ones that the LFS guy considers to be "true tiger shovelnose' it would explain why he said that they don't get so big as the "not true tiger shovelnose" that he sold.
$150 for a nice tigrinus? Nice price, the cheapest I have seen were about $200.
