Man this is interesting! What are your water parameters in that tank bro? Also, does your tsn constantly swim around or just swim and sit type of swim?

Ive had him since april. Ive had nothing but white gravel in all my tanks for years and I have never had a fish lose their pigmentation because of it. Hes still very active eating like a champ and has clear eyes and intact fins and barbells...

How many fish and what kind? Sorry, I just don't know your experience.

I am dubious it is because the substrate. It may be a factor but not a deciding one, I am thinking. Fish normally get paler to various degrees to blend better with the environment, that's what everyone observes, but they do not lose colors altogether.
