Tigrinus constantly swimming up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lol that's good that he's branching out. Others have experienced the same thing. Nothing to worry about yet. I'd advise to keep moving as you usually would. Best thing to do as to not worry is ignore the tig honestly. Only look for tattered fins to be sure no one is bullying it. Aside from that I'd say it should be fine for two weeks if not longer before needing to eat.
Thanks for the advise! I'll just keep an eye on him and when i see any damage on him i'll just put him back to his tank to grow him out further and transfer him again once he's big enough

Emperor blue hook :)

I dont know about the jur bullying him though cause the jur doesnt move to much even when the tig is in his space he doesnt bother the tig. I just hope that he's still adjusting to his new environment cause its been a day since he started swimming upwards and he still hasnt changed. He's probably doing that cause he doesnt have a place to hide in the tank

Ah, my best guess was electric blue Hoplosternum catfish :)

That's a good sign that the jur hasn't turned on the tig immediately but it can still go either way. The jur can start doing it, or the tig can at any point. Neither one is sexually mature yet either BTW.

If the damage appears on the tig, I'd judge by the extent and the development. Sometimes an initial settlement of the differences may be all that was needed to figure things out. In that case, you could move the tig back but in vain. But if it is getting obviously worse over a time, then separation or another kind of interference (divider, furniture, redecoration, order of introduction reshuffle, etc.) becomes a necessity.

As stated by most, we think it is merely adjusting.

What Viper said I find interesting and a new thought to me. It made me stop and think. I never thought of the tigs as fish that would stress if there is no hide. I reached down and this is all I can squeeze out atm: looking at mine, most never hide and appear to not need a hide but if there is a nook where they can rest, some, not all, may utilize it. Tiny tigs, ~3", may rely on a hide more when introduced into a new tank.

I have a 9" tig that i recently moved to a new tank that has some other bigger fish like a 12" gatf, 10" golden dorado, 12" juruense, 12" giraffe cat, 8" ebh, 6" silver dollars, 8" granulated cat. I see the tig constantly swimming up in a stationary position whole day against the side of the tank and is not eating? Does this mean that the tig is stressed or is it just him still adjusting to his new environment? He was in a 75gal growout tank before and he's only done the swimming up against the glass a few times. And when i first got him he already started eating the first day

I'll chime in here with some shared opinions and some contradictory ones. The GATF and Dorado are aggressive tank mates, they are likely stressing the Tig out. I've seen multiple cases where Tig's have swam vertically the majority of the time in a tank against the wall when the tank mates were freaking them out, even in Tigs as big as 16" with smaller tank mates. One example that comes to mind is a case where a big Tig prolly 18" was kept with big but smaller than it Datnoids. Never damage on the Tig but I guess it felt threatened so hugged the walls.

Maybe I overlooked it but didn't see the size of the new tank listed. How many gallons/dimensions?

Any current in that part of the tank it spends most of the time?

From personal experience I've never found any of the shovelnose specie catfish to "hide" at any size and I've kept them from 2"-30". They always seemed to be confident species and just hung out wherever they felt like it on the bottom.

Also I guess I'm one of the exceptions to the rule but have kept Tig/Jur together to 12" without issue in the past in a 240G so decent sized tank. Maybe I was just lucky or them sharing the tank with other shovelnose kept everyone in check. At the time they were paired with a 18" TSN and 12" Planiceps for catfish tank mates plus some 12-16" Cichla.

Thanks everyone for your inputs! The tig has already started eating today, not as much as he usually eats but he's getting there. Hopefully in the next coming days he'll start to eat normally again. he still swims vertically though, but i guess its alright as long as he's eating :)

So the culprit why the tig is constantly swimming vertically was the giraffe cat, whenever the tig stays at the bottom of the tank the giraffe bullies him, like he's sucking the tigrinus' slime coat. He used to do that to my jur as well which caused the jur to swim vertically also to stay away from the g-cat. I moved the g-cat out of the tank. So far the tig is now resting at the bottom of the tank. I'll just keep on keeping an eye on him

Wow. I can't say I could expect it. Live and learn. Great job.

Consistent with Shane's report here on pages 5-6 where a gcat was bothering a small tig: https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/my-tigrinus-thread.706835/page-6
