Tigrinus Help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Gotcha. Thanks much again.

I've only kept one tig for about a year. It'd grown from ~5" to ~8" and I lost it during a move. I gave it some shrimp but also other foods. I vaguely recall some other tig keepers agreeing with your advice here on MFK about crustaceans being a problem with tigs in particular, as opposed to the general and understood problem of feeding primarily or exclusively crustacean diet because of the high thiaminase content in crustaceans.

If you kept one for 1 year and it only grew 3" it must have had other issues as they should grow 1" - 2" per month only slowing down at about 14"

Agreed. I've had trouble with breaking it off live and tank mates being much faster eaters. It never was sick or thin though.

It look fine I think there are 2 variants the crazy stripe type that you had and the normal stripe type

If you look at you pic you can see y shape at the bottom and starting at the top as well I have had both types
The y stripe ones do take a bit longer to start growing but seam to grow larger than the normal stripes

I know you can say it's a different variant based on stripes alone but I think they may just be a different fishing location as the Y stripe one seams to also have tail streamers the same size top and bottom of the tail but the normal stripe one has a much longer streamer on the top of the tail

I maybe completely wrong but I have had a few of each a the Y stripe are a much more bulky fish

Good luck growing it on once you get to 12" all the hard work is done

Crazy stripe ones grow likely slower... Interesting. You are a wealth of information on tigs. Gotta make a mental note to myself :)
