would just like to know how long any of you guys have kept your tig for what size they are now and what size they were when you goth them

also anyone who has lost a tig for no reason (sudern death) and what happend just before death if anything

pics would be nice

I have had mine for about 6 weeks :naughty: He has grown at least 1.5" since I got him. It only took me 24 hours to get him eating frozen Krill, then Silversides. I love this fish very much. I have decided to keep him all by himself in the 180 he's in now with no tankmates. I was foolish and originally housed 7 Red Hook Silver Dollars with him. Silver Dollars are Ick magnets and came in with it (they were all shipped from the same dealer) I didn't see signs of it for 2 or 3 days. I freaked out and pulled the hooks from the tank. The Tig developed Ick 24 hours later and I treated him for 9 days with Ick Guard II, it worked, and I hope it never comes back. From now on I am a single specimen tank guy, no more chances.

from what i have seem they seam to do well for 2-4 months then gone for no reason

please keep us posted on how you get on

Your thread on the other board did not bring you the answer you were looking for?

Tigrinus are hardy catfish that grow fast. They have specific needs and if those are not met , it could spell trouble for the animal.

They are also wild caught so it is important to buy from a reputable seller. Wild caught fish that arent properly nursed back to health by the importer (i.e no Q or acclimation period ) can spell trouble.

Ive had 3 tigs from past to present. Ive kept them at a pretty good size and then i sold them and traded away. Right now i have a 6-7 incher that has been with me for about 2-3 mos. Rock solid and growing by the day.

Thats what I've found as well. They are a needy cat. If you start noticing the body is pink it's a good way to tell there is something wrong with it and you have to fidget with everything until it goes away. It's practically blind, so diet is one of the harder things to keep going. Temperature should be kept high like 84F. As they get bigger they are a lot easier on there parameters.
They are what we would call a deep river cat and dwell mostly in darkness. When something bumps into their lyres or whiskers they will whip around and snap at it.

84 degrees??? where did you get that?? I thought 80 was more like it??

from what ive read, tigs are found in rapid water rivers and that they need high oxygen levels in the tank to replicate their natural environment. Some people recommend a power filter or plenty of water flow as a basic requirement for keeping them.

I have known people who successfully kept tigs without powerheads or high water flow but hopefully this give you some ideas of the tigrinus' specialized needs.

i dont think they are as hardy as people say and and are not as hardy as rays for sure

as all of the ones i have lost 2 small (7inch) and 1 large (12inch) were all kept with rays and uaru.f which are both fish that are also ment to be hard to take care of both the rays and uaru.f were doing very well and i have not lost any of them

the seems to be a difference of opinion on what the temp should be kept at mine was at 84f which i would also say is right for were tigs come from

my tank is very well airated with 2 x powerful inturnals ehiem 2252s with defusers (so lots of air)

so their is still no reason for the sudern death :(

i had one for about 9 months.. this was like 2-3 years ago
bought it at 4" grew to about 8".. i had no clue what i was doing with it ..

then i bought a few at the 'grey' size 1" grew them to 4" and my heater poped and killed them... had them about 4 months i think... i got them in febuary
