Personally i'd go with the Jurunese, they are cheaper and if they happen to die you can get another one and still be paying under the $150 you found a Tig for.. And the $150 for a Tig you won't find all the time either so usually if you do find one you better jump quick.

Yeah, I'm probably gonna go with the jur, I meen; I know it may sound kinda bad but atleast if it dies I wont be out of cash and I could easily get another and try again.

If I do good with a jur for a couple years, then I would maybe get a tigrinus.

I've still gotta buy the 150, filtration, etc first.

Excellent!!! I was readingt this and thinking to myself Tigs are not a good starter cat... Personally I think that they should be considered after you have been able to keep some other cats alive for multiple years... Channels and Bullheads and such don't count IMO because you could run them out of water and not kill them... they are like the cockroach of the catfish world... just can't kill them (great starter cats ;) )

;)

Now I just need to get the tank, set it up, cycle it, decorate it, get the gars, then get the jur.

I've got a Juruense he's a great lookin fish and does some awesome posin for pics. Though from what I hear that's the norm for this family of cats. I haven't had him very long about 3 months I'd say. He wasn't very active at first just kind did that tripod stance and would move from stone to stone with that pose. They don't seem to be great hunters tho needing their prey to pass infront of their faces. They're not active hunters like my hybrid who the minute prey hits the water starts searchin it out. I read they like current so I've got 2 powerheads goin at different levels so no matter where he is there's current. Plus the current carries the food by his face, specially since he perches himself right in it. My Juruense eats earthworms, blackworms and feeders. Only recently has he become more active swimmin around occasionally patrolin the tank. Right now he's my most active fish and the other good thing is he doesn't ever really hide. I have encountered one problem which is the feeders are always nipping at his tail. Im trying to train him to handfeed to eliminate this problem, but he's harder to train then my other fish. All my other cats eat from my hand, heck my Gulpers chase my hand around bumping into it and mouthing parts of my arm during tank maintenance. Also I got him from infinite aquatics at 5". Rich is an awesome vendor who sells quality fish, so is a good source for your purchase. Though since you said about Trigunus for $150 you probably already know about him. I hope this helped, like I said I haven't had him for very long but these are my experiences with the Juruense.

Thanks for the info!
That first pic is hilarious!

Since you keep gulpers, I thought I'd just ask, how well do you think gulpers would fair with Gar?
I know they can eat 13'' arowana, but arowana are a more flexible fish that they would bend into there mouth but a gar is a very stiff fish...

If the gar is large enough and there first maybe it might work. Problem is I think gulpers prey on streamlined fish. So I think he'll repeatedly try to eat the gar. My experience has led me to not chance it. Even if the gulper doesn't successfully eat the gar he'll probably kill it while trying to. I've seen cats grab fish by their heads(the gulpers favorite place to grab) and suffocate a hapless fish. I know this to be true of gulpers they go for the head and once they've got something nothing will make them let go. Trust me I've had experience with a 3" gulpers jaws and they're more powerful than you wind up giving them credit for.

What are the dimensions of the tank 72''by 18'' or 60''by 24'' ?

ehhh you could but more room would be better with alot of current you could do it hard to say which to get jurs are suppoed to get a little bigger but tigs are alot more pricey and like said aren't a good starter cat soo i'd say go with the jur

gulper would be risky if you got one the right size then it could work fine but they too are pretty expensive

What kind of gar ? any true gar would get a little big for your tank even a florida/spotted would get a little big and need longer and wider tanks some are know to pannic and become skidish when kept in short tanks
