Hey, I just upgraded my tank to a 180g 6x2x2 set up and was wondering how well a tilapia buttikoferi would work with an oscar/gt etc... my fish at the moment are all under 4".. and i know the butti gets very aggresive but in this footprint, and having him small with the others, could it work? or am i just setting myself up for failure? .. thanks!

I'd say failure honestly. Butti are mean and Oscar and Gt are not the toughest ans would be killed easily.

I concur with Crazy mike.. the growth rate of Oscar MAY be an advantage for a short while, the GT would likely be toast right away. Butti is a whole other level of mean, and generally do ok with similar aggressive CA's like Jags, Midas etc.

thx, thats what i thought.... would adding a 2nd oscar be worth wild? (would love to add an albino) .. currently have a 4 inch oscar / GT and a 2 inch jag in my 180... thanks for all the advise

No with a butti, the jag alone may cause issues in the future but with a butti its certain

tbh I have seen people succesfully keep Butti with other fish, its just really hit and miss. depends on the species and temprement of the fish too.

Oscars get their asses kicked by everything, I had a vieja that stripped all the skin off an oscar and ripped its eye out. The oscar survived and recovered 100% but they were the same size.

Never kept an oscar bit I had a gt and butti and no doubt the butti was a killer but the gt just pretended to be tough but wasnt a real threat. They were in separate tanks of course and I wouldnt give the gt an hour in the same tank as the butti. When ive seen butti with other fish its been other fish like flowerhorns midas and such

If you ask me you'll soon find that Buttikoferi are extremely boring fish to own much like most African species. I saw a tank full of them last week and you had to look twice to properly notice them... No real colours and just shoaling and looking very random. American cichlids have the greatest diversity in colour and character.

PS... Buttikferis may be a tough fish, by the way but not in the same league as the beasts of the central American waterways... so if Badass cichlids are your thing better check out these real nasty cichlids, but with a lot more colour and character ;)
