Not really sure about the pop-eye, but that fish looks almost like a hybrid of some sort. From the pictures, it does not look like a Butta. Lips are huge and aren't butta at the lenght much taller in size?

Tom: this is what I have, API Triple sulfa and Seahchem Paragaurd for my meds as per a Ciclid group member for treatment. Ordered on line should be here when the test kit comes. Your Ideas?

Unfortunatly neither of those will do you any good with this. At minimum you can do an epsom salt bath of 1 tablespoon per gallon (use tank water) bath the fish in this for 15-20 mins. the epsom salt will draw the fluid build from behind the eye and releave some of the pressure. Petsmart will carry the Erythromycin you need.

Epson salt @ one tablespoon per gallon? 15-20 minute Bath.. With The Erythromycin @ what dosage? The Cichlid guy said it was a bacterial infection causing the problems.. I see you do not agree? Well I guess I should look a little more before I open my mouth.. Pop-eye is a bacterial infection... so I will pick up the meds,, thanks Tom

On the first page post#10 second paragraph I gave instructions and dosing for a bath if you chose to do it that way this combines the Erythromycin with epsom salt. The instructions from post #15 is an epsom salt bath without the Erythromycin for temporary relief of the fluid build up behind the eyes, if Erythromycin was not available. Do not confuse the two the dosing of ES is different.

Pop-eye is a symptom of an internal bacterial infection, as I explained on page one it can be cause by several very different bacterium which need to be treated differently. The treatment I am suggesting is for the most common cause. However if this is not effective there are other options available. Please ask if you have any questions about treatment, re-read the thread before starting.

I'm sorry I am not familiar with "The Cichlid Guy".

I saw there was different dosages in the post, thanks for clearing this up.. I will look for the Erythromycin @ Petsmart. just nervous about treating this.. Thanks again Dan

Hello Tom: Completed tests on tank water.. Ph8.2 Nitrites 0 ... Nitrates 80 PPM... Ammonia 0. I am using a fluidized bed reactor so I think I can get the Nitrates down to 40PPM Should I start the Ten day regimen with 1/4 teaspoon per gallon and the Erythromycin? in a hospital tank.

Yes. I would definatly try to get the nitrates down. Long term exposure to elavated levels of nitrate causes low level stress, over time this will weaken the immune system and leave the fish suseptable to illness. Just follow the instructions I gave you for either the in tank treatment or the short term bath which everone you have decided to go with.
