Tilapia for aquaponics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use koi in my 24/7 recirculating aquaponics system ...i also suggest "hydroton" clay pebbles as substrate. I had a very hard time growing anything in flourite or pea pebbles. Iron is also needed to sustain plants or they get yellow leaves, fish create everything else but iron. I also think tilipia would be fun...my setup is only 4'x4'x16" so i opted for about 12 koi. I simply love aquaponics. Very easy to maintain oncw its goin.

I just use bog plants as i couldnt keep anything else alive but the iron is key to any plants. I didnt know to use iron when i tried vegtables. You can see i now have a jungle lol...all of these plants are 36-48" tall and were supposed to max out under 24".

As for tilapia i vote the red nile hybrids :) very attractive...white niles are not bad either. Id like to try them eventually in a larger system like an ibc tote or 800 stock tank.

Hear in California, Tilapia are placed in large ponds....these large ponds are the first step withiin a large filtration process used to grow other freshwater fish for the food industry.........The tilapia actually eat the major "junk" that runs out of the main tanks........I would say the tilapia are more of mechanical filtration.........
