I have wondered the same thing...I have a big male Con about 5" and a big female Tilapia about 12" sometimes I see the Con trying to get "sweet" with her...I think she would probably anhiliate him if he tried to pursue too hard though...

what if they were about the same size?

not sure size matters much . . . my 3" pink convict mated with a 6" Carpintis, and really, the Carpintis is like 4x the size, when you compare total mass

they have paired-up quite happily and successfully . . . no worries

now that size is out of the way....the question is..will their "stuff" mix?

I think size would play a big factor...I know con's can reproduce at very small sizes, I am just not sure at what size a Tilapia female is able to reproduce...and based on how brutal and physical the courting process can be...I would imagine a big size difference can also be an issue.

you are saying what you "imagine" would be the case, and I am citing an example of actual experience, where it was a non-issue

but we all know that individual cichlids will behave differently . . . the point should be, every circumstance is unique and the OP won't have an answer until it is tried . . . but size is not determinative

frankly, I have no idea how rough the tilapia mating ritual is, but convicts are very tough little fish . . .

If i'm not mistaken Tilipias are moothbooders. And Cons isn't..
That's two different ways of spawing which would make it even more difficult imo...
