Tilapia x Convict?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i am going to try this....i have both already....

i can't see it working out. now im NOT a cichlid expert or anything but for the most part fish can't breed with other fish not in their own genus or in a very closely related genus, tiliapia and cons are like apples and oranges they come from completely oposite parts of the world and would not produce young

EDIT: jsut looked it up cons and tilapia arn't even in the same subfamily (cons are the central/south american subfamily tilapia are in the african subfamily) they cannot produce young

you are saying what you "imagine" would be the case, and I am citing an example of actual experience, where it was a non-issue

but we all know that individual cichlids will behave differently . . . the point should be, every circumstance is unique and the OP won't have an answer until it is tried . . . but size is not determinative

frankly, I have no idea how rough the tilapia mating ritual is, but convicts are very tough little fish . . .
..but your experience is with a con and an carpintis...two central american cichlids. I actually have a female tilapia and a male con in the same tank and I am saying for a fact that if that little Con tries getting too sweet, no matter the size, it will be destroyed...period. I don't care how tough convicts are, they are no match for an adult buttikoferi head to head. I definately agree with your second paragraph though.

pretty sure tilapia are african, and cons being american, they will not breed fullstop.
your little male might be a tad horney, but thats it.
