Tile as a background?

Here is my progress so far. I have yet to seal the cracks in between the tiles. Is this really necessary? I know debris can get caught in the cracks but couldn't I just spray water into the cracks to get it out at every water change? Let me know what you think.

The side of the tank is on the floor in my garage.

Something to take note - Is your tile very heavy? If the tile manage to drop it will crash your tank base so be careful.
 
Thanks, I got the idea from another forum, but he used bathroom design tiles with cock spacing. I wanted a more natural look. The slate tiles are flush with each other and the aquarium silicone is very near the edges on the backside of the tiles. It worked pretty good on my 20L to

The tile is not very heavy. Even if it dropped from the top I'm sure the water would help slow it's fall enough that it wouldn't break the tank. The tank is acrylic so it doesn't break as easily as glass.
