Tile instead of epoxy?

I wouldn't. I don't think grout is waterproof. Isn't that why you have to reseal tile in a shower every 3-5 years?
Dont recall where I seen it but if you use silicone instead of grout and to glue in place I think it has been done. search the forums
tile should work kinda like a tile swimming pool, maybe someone with some background in swimming pool's could give you a little more info on that.
Thats when your using Gunnite for pools.I doubt that using it would work.Even if you managed to create a seal,i would neeeever trust it!!!!!
This is all before Gunnite ot Shotcrete...
The old city Aquariums were tiled.
In Marrakesh raised tiled carp ponds have been around for centuries.
The easiest way is to use silicone for both the thin set and the grout. clean the ceramic tile edges to degrease/dewax them so the silicone will stick. It's preferable that the plywood box (pond) be very stiff (the less flexure the less possibility of fracture leaks.

Im not sure you could make the plywood stiff enough,flex would mean failure.It would make an awesome retro looking tank though
