Tiled aquarium bottom with rays?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used glazed ceramic tile in several of my ray tanks without any issues (look up some of my old threads with pics). Just cut them to fit the bottom - no glue no grout. Didin't have any issues with water quality or waste getting underneath the tile. Make sure you used smooth glazed tile and not rough or porous tile. Algae grows into the porous and rough tile making it hard to keep clean. When I moved I painted the bottom of the tanks before setting them back up so I don't use the tile anymore.

Thanks a ton. Very helpful

I have ceramic tiles on 4 tanks currently.
I just gave them a good wash and placed them, if you need to do any cuts then give them a real good wash because they'll leech a lot of crap into the water.
I didn't grout, i didn't silicone them down either - just placed them.
The ray pups are fine - the large rays can lift the tiles up somehow - i don't know how.
On one of the four tanks i have to use a stick to push the tiles back in place once a week, maybe i just didn't fit them tight enough to start with.
It's as simple as that though, clean with hose and rub down with a brush/sponge and fit in place.

As mentioned - it won't be the bare bottom causing drop eye, it's just the arowana.

Ya thanks for the input. Ive done some reading and put out a thread about the arow. It is inevitable by the looks of it.

One thing i forgot to mention. After cutting the tile, use a stone to knock the edge down. They can be rather sharp and cut the rays if they go through the motions of trying to bury themselves.

K great. I think im gonna go for it as sand didnt work so well with the cornerflows because my corner flows also suck water from lower in the tank and when the rays move about the sand gets stired up and sucked into the filtration. I also find they seem to prefer bare bottom surprisingly.

All my tanks have been tile bottom and I wouldn't do it any other way. I've found that my gang of clown loaches do a very good job at keeping detritus from accumulating underneathe the tiles. I also am a mad man when it comes to flow, so nothing really has a chance to settle on the bottom.

Ya same with the flow on my end. Ive bought some nice 24x12 porcelain tiles that are heavy so the rays wont be ale to lift them out of place. Now I've gotta rent a tile saw and cut them to size. Should look sharp once completed.

Never say never as my stingrays can move 10lb rocks around!

Mine move a 20 lb mopani around the tank. These tiles are very heavy and once down they wont be easy to lift but i guess ill have to wait and see. Lol
