Freshwater lionfish? I had one for a while and he was ugly! Eats live goldfish! There are some sweet puffers too! Pig or hog nose? They are killers! Couldnt keep anything with him? He would bite the stomachs out of bigger fish! Not that active but they are ugly and not commonly seen by people who dont really know fish?

buy fancy goldfish, tell them they are pirahnas, people that have no clue about fish keeping wont know the difference.
Wolf Fish "hoplias Malabaricus." Would be fine in a 55g for sometime, but they max out at 20" plus.
Red Wolf Fish Eur. Eur., Piranha - Serra. Maculatus or Sanchezi, Exodon shoal, or if you can upgrade to 75 gal in a few years - Serrasalmus Elongatus - this guy would be entertaining, unusual, and a tad scary to onlookers.
dont even get a fish if thats why you want them.. and in a 40-50 gallon, the "scariest" thing might be along the lines of an extra-large guppy.

but a severum could use a bigger tank, i would suggest just goin bigger! you will want to in the future anyway haha
