I have had my pair together for 4/5 months with eggs being laid a few times (but always disappeared), there has always been a little bit of scrapping but lately the male is looking really tattered and is always hiding at the other end of the tank (unless feeding). The female frequently chases him about and his starting to look drab - do I call it a day and split them up?

IMO split them up, you probably know male is stressed due to his color he is displaying.

I agree seperating them is your best bet at survival , but keep in mind once seperated you'll never be able to reintroduce them.

Another option is to try owering the temps , as cold as you can(down to 15cor a bit lower even)

Cooling them may help lower agression and/or lessen breeding activities. Then warm them up again next spring and hope that the females more receptive after a cooling period.

If your goal is to breed them the second option is best, but it's not guaranteed to work chance so you might loose the male in the end.

Hope that helps!
