is having a timer on your tank less stressful to fish than just turnin the lights on and off on your own ?

I wouldn't think so. And as long as you turn on the lights around the same time............

I use timers because it is easier for me; I don't think it is any less (or more) stressful for the fish . . .

Timers are AMAZING. You don't know until you install them. I set mine shorter in winter and longer in summer to simulate nature a bit. And it's hands free. You just won't know until you do it. And never buy them at full price. Thrift stores are loaded with them. If you buy five and four work, you still win.

I have timers on all my planted tanks. They don't seem to be bothered. And I know the plants are getting the light they need.

Right now I have

2 timers in my bedroom tank, 1 for lights and 1 for the powerhead to cut off at night

3 timers on reptile tank. 1 for the light, 1 for the mini pond inside the enclosure (small filter cut off at night), and 1 for the vent fan.

3 for the hundred gallon tank. 1 for each light..x2, and 1 for the power head.

Not fish related but I have motion sensor lights in every room so the lights cut off when there is no movement in the room...Saves energy.

I just purchased 2 of the Coral Life digital timers yesterday from Petco. At $10/each I couldn't pass 'em up. I've been using the Zilla timer (same timer-different sticker) for about 2 years now. I'd go crazy if I had to manually turn the lights/heaters off everyday.

I work shift work, 12 hour shifts. I think timers are the only way to keep any type of routine for my fish. When I'm on dayshift, I leave the house at 5:00 am. When I'm on nights, I leave at 5:00 pm. Without timers, my fish would be as screwed up as me.:)
