Tiny discovery that is definately worth sharing.

This thread has gone futher then I could have ever imagined. I am very interested in evertone's results.

The single plant (bunch) with roots in the bio-balls is actually losing the root. It is preferring the soil to the plastic balls.

The plant in the sump has tremendous roots, and growing. -FM

Great read.

Any updates? Seems the rays are breeding like rabbits......

i think i am heading to the garden store this weekend.

I have been requested by the High School Administration to bring these practices into the classroom and offer students classes on recirculating Aquaculture. These students are willing and able to replicate my results. The students will be raising Yellow Perch, Tilapia along with Motoro, Marble Motoro and possibly Leo or Henlei. The Black rays will be held in reserve until the students prove their methods, attention to detail and ethics are sound.

As for my system in particular, I will post up some better details within the week. Much has changed but must has stayed the same. -FM

Some of us raykeepers have been discussing Nitrates the last week or 2 and some are still skeptical. I myself have yet to try this but will definetly be looking into incorporating it in the next few weeks. Any idea how long after the plants are added before we start experiencing results? I myself have been moved by your dedication and am a firm believer in the results. I don't know why you would go through all this trouble if the results weren't significant enough to impact our habbits. Looking forward to seeing some more results!! Thank you Firemedic!!

More pics please!!!!

Firemedic, aren't you using water hyacinth too? I know that hyacinth's do a lot as far as removing nitrates, but are a little sceptical that pothos are doing this much..

is this still your stock?

oh and more pictures are a must!

As an addition:

I have three rays in 300 +/- gallons so bio load isn't actually too bad...water is filtered through 33 vertical gallons of biofilter before it reaches the plants.

I've been growing lucky bamboo in my large sumps. Several of the stalks are taller than I am (I'm 6'4"). The root bundles are huge and the water chems have remained good and stable with slightly reduced waterchange schedules.

Wow. I think I might get some of those lucky bamboos and toss them in.

I bought a pothos plant last week, and put clippings in the water without seeing this thread. It has been a little over a week and one of them has multple roots protruding out. Here is a pic:
