In the process of making a cover for my ten gallon tank with some cut out spots for a heater and the filter and a nice hole in the center for a uv light. My question is what should i seal it with? Would a coat of spray paint be fine or should i use actual wood sealant even though its not actually in the water? Can post some pics if anyone wants them but i doubt it for such a tiny project lol.

Alright, the first picture is just of the tank itself....kinda dangerous how it is set up since the lights just kinda balancing there. The play is to upgrade it to a grow out tank for bichirs as soon as i come into some more money to get some other tanks up and running, as of right now its just a goldfish tank, hey..gotta start somewhere. The second pic is of the wood im gonna cut it out of, i had to recycle the wood from a sheild i had made for when i nerded out with the occasional LARP. I sealed in a bad knot and a couple holes in the wood and you can see where i plan to cut :] probly get it all done tomorrow night when im off work.
To be honest I would not have used wood in the first place, since there is always the possibility of leeching substances into the water from the glue in the plywood (I'm assuming it's plywood) or anything you coat it with. Since you're making a cover with it, water will always be condensing on it and dripping back into the tank. But if that's what you wanna do, I think your best bet would be a spar urethane or epoxy resin. Spar urethane is designed to be weather/water proof, but I can't say 100% that it's fish safe. Epoxy resin is fish safe, but you'll spend as much on that as you would on buying a commercially made hood.
